We create an environment that makes you as comfortable as possible. We always respect your dignity, problem and circumstances. We protect your confidentiality as carefully as we would protect our own. We match your needs and problems with a therapist familiar with and able to address those problems. We do nothing to you, but only with you, as an active participant. We don't jump to conclusions. We take a comprehensive history of your symptoms and problems before we make recommendations. We don't use jargon. Your therapist or psychiatrist will explain your problem and treatment to you in plain English. We practice therapy in an ethical, compassionate and confidential environment. We work together as a team with you, your family, and your doctor. However, your therapist will do so only if you and your therapist believe it is important in your care AND you give him/her permission. We encourage questions about your treatment and care. We refer to psychiatrists or family doctors if we believe medications may help, but we will never insist on it or pressure you to take medications. We refer only to providers to whom we would refer our own family members. We use treatments recognized as legitimate forms of treatment by the American Psychological Association, National Association of Social Workers, or American Psychiatric Association. If we believe we do not have the skills or expertise to help you with your problem, we will refer to another therapist or provider here or in the community. We ask you for ongoing feedback. We encourage you to tell us if you feel you are not benefiting from treatment. We do not take it personally if you request a transfer to another therapist here or elsewhere. We encourage you to learn about your disorder or problem and will recommend relevant reading or information resources. We practice our art as licensed professionals who use well studied and established types of treatment such as Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Interpersonal Psychotherapy, Systemic Family Therapy, and Medication Therapy. There is much written about these forms of therapy. Here is a link to two excellent websites, which will describe in much more detail these therapies, and how therapy works. http://www.guidetopsychology.com/txtypes.htm http://www.doh.gov.uk/mentalhealth/treatmentguideline
