CREDENTIALS/EXPERIENCE
Dr. Curtis
received his doctorate in clinical psychology from Widener University’s
Graduate Clinical Psychology program. Integrated Internships were completed
at Eagleville Hospital and Swarthmore College Psychological Services.
He received extensive post-doctoral training at Eagleville Hospital (a
prominent drug and alcohol rehabilitation center) where he worked as a
staff psychologist for several years and was involved in all aspects of
the rehabilitation process. A licensed psychologist for 10 years, he holds
a Certificate of Proficiency in the Treatment of Alcohol and Other Substance
Use Disorders through the American Psychological Association’s College
of Professional Psychology.
At INTROSPECT,
Dr. Curtis has been a psychologist with INTROSPECT for 10 years, providing
assessments, individual psychotherapy, couples and family therapy. He
treats patients 18 years and older. Areas of special interest include
loss/mourning and substance use and addiction issues. Other areas of expertise
include working with anxiety, excessive worry, panic, mood swings, depression,
adjustment problems, anger management, stress management, marital or relationship
difficulties.
Grounded in
insight-oriented psychotherapy, Dr. Curtis helps provide a safe supportive
environment in which patients can explore their concerns and issues in
order to gain awareness of what motivates their behavior. This insight
is often the key to improvement and personal growth. Dr. Curtis also has
extensive experience with cognitive-behavioral (thinking-doing) methods
that are helpful in imparting specific coping strategies for patients
to apply to their difficulties. A highly experienced therapist, Dr. Curtis
understands that treatment must be pragmatic and individualized according
to the patient’s situation, needs and resources. He knows when to
be non-directive and when to be more structured. Nowhere is this flexibility
in approach needed more then when a person’s use of alcohol or drugs
is contributing to their difficulties.
In addition
to seeing patients at the INTROSPECT office, Dr. Curtis also regularly
visits several nursing homes in the area to provide consultation and individual
psychotherapy. He has conducted staff in service training on treatment
of substance abuse and dual diagnosis. Dr. Curtis has served as an INTROSPECT
representative to a Quality Management Committee of a managed care group.
