THERAPEUTIC
APPROACH
I use behavior
therapy consisting of rewards and consequences, cognitive behavioral therapy,
and rational emotive behavior therapy, as well as solution focused brief
therapy. I am also grounded in other theories such as ego psychology and
client centered Rogerian therapy. When working with families, a systems
approach is often used. My clients can count on a warm, kind, and supportive
atmosphere. They, even more importantly, can count on a completely safe
and confidential positive therapeutic experience.
PERSONAL
STATEMENT
I have thoroughly
enjoyed my career as a university professor and a clinical psychologist
treating children, adolescents, adults, couples and groups as well as
psychological testing, training, consulting and supervision of new therapists.
For me, nothing equals the satisfaction of watching a client, a couple,
or a family improve significantly from the first time they visited my
office until the last time I treated them. Therapy is a planned change
of behavior(s) that does not seem to be working for the client.
As a therapist,
my job is not to change the client's behavior but to help the client learn
how to change their own thoughts, behaviors, and attitudes. Consequently,
I see my job as a therapist much like that of a coach or a teacher. A
football coach does not score any points for his team, but he rather motivates,
calls the plays that he thinks will win the game, and changes the plays
as needed according to the conditions on the field.
